Material Overview

Flat Roofing / TPO & EPDM

Flat and low-slope roofing requires specialized materials and installation techniques that differ significantly from steep-slope systems. We install two of the most reliable flat roofing systems available: TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) and EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer). Both offer excellent waterproofing, UV resistance, and long-term performance for residential and commercial applications throughout the Triangle.

TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) is currently the most popular flat roofing membrane in the United States. It's a single-ply white membrane that reflects solar heat, reducing cooling costs — a significant advantage during North Carolina's hot summers. TPO seams are heat-welded, creating a bond that is actually stronger than the membrane itself. This makes it an extremely reliable waterproofing solution when installed correctly by a trained crew.

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber membrane that has been used in flat roofing applications for over 50 years. It's known for its flexibility in cold temperatures, excellent UV resistance, and long track record of performance. EPDM is typically black and absorbs heat, which can be a consideration in warmer climates. Both systems are excellent choices for flat and low-slope roofs — we'll help you determine which is the better fit for your specific application.

Pros & Cons

What to Expect

Advantages

Excellent waterproofing performance
Resistant to UV radiation and ozone
TPO reflects heat — energy efficient
Lightweight and flexible
Resistant to punctures and tears
Easy to repair and maintain
Cost-effective for flat/low-slope applications

Considerations

Not suitable for steep-slope roofs
Requires professional installation for proper sealing
EPDM can shrink over time if not properly installed
Ponding water can be an issue without proper drainage
Shorter lifespan than metal or tile

Best Use Cases

Flat or low-slope roofs on residential additions, garages, commercial buildings, and homes with modern architectural designs. Ideal for areas requiring a watertight membrane system.

How We Install It

We begin with a thorough inspection of the existing substrate. New insulation boards are installed as needed for proper drainage. TPO membranes are heat-welded at all seams for a watertight bond. EPDM is adhered with bonding adhesive and all seams are sealed with lap sealant and cover tape. All penetrations receive custom-fabricated metal flashings.

Warranty

10–20 year manufacturer warranty depending on membrane thickness and product line. 10-year labor warranty on all installations.
